Global warming could cause this country to disappear altogether
Tuvalu is a tiny country, located midway between the US state Hawaii and Australia. Less than 11,000 in population, this country is under a major threat that could see it disappear odd the face of the earth. Tuvalu is sinking with rapid pace due to the rise of the sea level in the Pacific Ocean.
And this is not something which has instantly come up, the country has been disappearing beneath the waves for a long time. 7 years ago, a documentary called “King Tide; The Sinking of Tuvalu” called it the first country destined to be washed away due to the effect of global warming, which would make Tuvaluans the first complete nation of climate refugees. Even after 7 years, the country hasn’t seen a solid plan of action to halt this or figure out an alternative.
Seeing things go out of control, Enele Spoaga, Prime Minister of Tuvalu spoke up this week. On his recent visit to Europe, he urged EU leaders to support him in saving Tuvalu from disappearing. The country is just 4 meters above sea level at its highest level with the increase of greenhouse emissions all around the world. He called on Europe to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to keep global warming down to 1.5C, which scientists say is a safer limit than the current goal of 2C, the Brussels Times reports. He added “We need to save Tuvalu to save the world. If this island disappears under water, it is not the end of climate change. And I ask you what future do we hold? We need to collaborate as one human face to save human kind.”
